Street dancers developed it in urban neighborhoods without a formal process. Hip-hop dance is not a studio-derived style. After the millennium, newer social dances such as the Cha Cha Slide and the Dougie also caught on and became very popular. Dances from the 1990s such as the Running Man, the Worm, and the Cabbage Patch entered the mainstream and became fad dances. Parallel with the evolution of hip-hop music, hip-hop social dancing emerged from breaking and the funk styles into different forms. Uprock, roboting, and boogaloo are respected dance styles but none of them are as mainstream or popular as breaking, locking, and popping. Boogaloo gained more exposure because it is the namesake of the Electric Boogaloos crew. The Brooklyn-based dance style uprock influenced breaking early in its development. The most influential groups were Rock Steady Crew, New York City Breakers, The Lockers, and The Electric Boogaloos who are responsible for the spread of breaking, locking, and popping respectively. ![]() More than 50 years old, hip-hop dance became widely known after the first professional street-based dance crews formed in the 1970s in the United States. They share common ground in their street origins and in their improvisational nature. All of these dance styles are different stylistically. Black Americans in California created locking, roboting, boogaloo, and popping-collectively referred to as the funk styles. Black Americans and Latino Americans created uprock and breaking in New York City. Boogaloo consists isolated sharp angles, hip rotations, and utilizing the rest of the body. With this combination they created something new, Boogaloo. Over in Fresno, California in 1976 The Elecctronic Boogaloo Lockers formed a group and took locking to a whole new level by adding everyday moves and moves from other performers. The dancers added different arm extensions and points to along with splits and knee drops and various other moves that would bring them to the ground and then they’d spring back up. Lockingis movement that pieces together a mix of steps and movement with something like a stop or pause. When trying to do the “funky chicken” Don Campbell added some new techniques to the dance (locking of the joints) and developed locking. Over on the west side in the streets of Los Angeles, California locking was being born thanks to Don Campbell. This gave the breakers a longer opportunity to take advantage of the breaks and show their style and best tricks. Kool DJ Herc is the one who figured out how to extend the beat with two turntables, a mixer and two of the same records. Dancers used these breaks and coordinated their dance moves with them. The term “breaking” was originally an insult and it also happens to be the part in which the percussion instruments in the song were the most forceful. They say DJ Afrika Bambaata was the first to name the movement, although MCs had been using the word to rhyme. Around the 1980s media started to pick up on a form that was classified as B reak dancing. New York City is credited with being the birth place of hip hop dance.
